Let me preface this by saying I am a sand and sea type of girl. Or so I thought. I have a deep love for the ocean, and I can only explain it to people who share that love. But after a weekend spent in Victoria Falls, my heart is fair game.
The town, the waterfalls, the people and the wildlife are so true to Africa’s well-known warm spirit that you’ll leave feeling like you’re stepping out of a giant hug. Here’s an overview of my recent three-day stint. I was short on time, so I strongly suggest exploring at a more leisurely pace!
Day 1: Victoria Falls Airport and stunning gorge sundowners
We arrived at Victoria Falls Airport on a Fast Jet flight, and the border control was seamless (especially considering that South African passports usually include some type of hassle). No e-visa or visa on arrival is necessary for South African passport holders. Outside, we were greeted by Caleb, our friendly guide and driver, who took us to The Wallow Lodge.
After a late lunch, we went on a game drive and decided to wind down atop a stunning gorge for sundowners. Looking down will give you butterflies, and if you look across you can see Zambia.

Day 2: Our Walking Tour
We woke up bright and early to catch the 07:30 transfer from the lodge to Victoria Falls, for our walking tour. The tour is not strenuous at all, and totalled 4km over the span of about two hours.
The magnificence of the Victoria Falls takes your breath away. Considering it was dry season, and the region was battling a two-year drought, I was still utterly amazed by the intensity of the cascading water. Caleb told us some more about the history of the falls while we wandered around the lookout points.

The perfect way to end the tour was with lunch at the eatery, called Lookout Café, which is very aptly named. Lunch is included when staying at one of the Wild Horizon properties. There is also an array of activities such as ziplining and a gorge swing on offer for the adventurous types.
The Wild Horizon portfolio consists of three properties: The Wallow Lodge, Old Drift Lodge and Elephant Camp Victoria Falls. The Wallow is a 4-star property, and Old Drift and Elephant Camp are 5-star properties.
We ended our day with a sunset cruise on the mighty Zambezi River, and again I was taken aback by the incredible landscape I saw before me. We were treated by some hippo and crocodile sightings.
Day 3: Checking Out
Checking out, purchasing a few last curios and gifts, and then heading to the airport, as the last days of trips usually are. The Victoria Falls to Johannesburg flight is an easy 1h45min, so you really can do it all in a weekend if you’re brave enough!
